This is Samar, Setare and Shahriar, Part I architecture students from the University of Westminster. We took them on site today as part of the RIBA student mentoring scheme.
This is the second time we've hosted the students and today we gave them a snap shot of the role of an architect at the later stages project development. Alongside the preparation of construction and the delivery of information, we discussed the challenges of delivering projects on site.
First we visited Great Portland Street and the Grade II listed public house which MSMR are renovating and restoring for The Crown Estate. Above a traditional Victorian pub at ground and basement level, we have also re-designed three floors of residential accommodation.
The listed features have been retained throughout but overall the new apartments will have a spacious, contemporary look and feel. The building is currently stripped, ready for the fit-out to commence.
Our second project stop was to New Burlington Street and the new build, two bedroom house, also for The Crown Estate. This project is almost finished and the students got to see how the use of clever space planning techniques can turn an extremely compact site into a comfortable, modern living space.
Helping to support prospective architects at all stages of their career is important to MSMR. We hope to provide opportunities for individuals to adopt a dynamic and engaged approach to their own career development even at this early stage in their education.
